Title
Future Power Systems: What are New and Challenges?
Abstract
Most electrical engineers and researchers know that the changes of power systems in recent decades are very fast and substantial. Starting from power generation, conventional synchronous power generators have been rapidly replaced by renewable wind and solar farms (38.4%) in order to solve the environment problems caused by burning fossil sources; In term of power transmission, more DC lines are visible in AC dominated transmission networks due to their high efficiency and long distance. The most important changes have occurred in distribution networks where AC loads are almost completely replaced by high efficiency DC loads or DC-linked loads. In this talk, we will discuss the recent changes of power systems and the challenge problems caused for power system control and operation. Some of the research works and the unsolved problems left by my research team in Nanyang Technological University will be presented.
